The Music Education Strategy funds music education professional development (PD) and learning packages for ºÚÁϳԹÏn Government classroom teachers, preschool educators and leaders each year.
Packages are designed for educators working in primary and early years, but could also benefit secondary educators.
The PD packages are delivered by 3 music associations with a focus on upskilling educators, strengthening knowledge and ability to deliver quality music education programs and activities for children and young people.
Professional development courses
Two course levels are offered: foundation and intermediate/continuing courses.
In 2025 the following packages are available by application:
Foundation courses
Foundation courses are mainly suitable for:
- preschool educators, generalist primary school teachers with an interest in delivering music as part of a learning program. There is generally no assumed prior music knowledge or experience, however some experience in learning or teaching music is always an advantage.
- music/performing arts specialists with an interest in delivering music as part of a learning program.
Package details
- 5.0 TRT release days for successful applicants, with sites expected to fund any remaining days
- attendance at 1 Saturday workshop
- an additional 3.0 TRT days subsidy for regional applicants (excluding Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Adelaide Plains).
- Attendees are expected to formally share their learnings with colleagues to help music programs to flourish at sites.
- Applicants must attend all training days and a minimum of 1 workshop to receive their PD certificates.
Intermediate/continuing courses
Intermediate/continuing courses are mainly suitable for:
- Educators with some experience in delivering music and are able to read and write basic formal notation (rhythmic and melodic) and have a basic understanding of music theory.
- Participants who have completed foundation packages and meet the assumed knowledge criteria outlined in the course descriptions.
Package details
- Course fees funded by Music Education Strategy.
- Kodály Certificate course participants will receive 3.0 TRT days as it partly takes place during term time with the site expected to provide TRT for any remaining days.
- OSASA and the Kodály Award for Generalist Teachers courses takes place in the school holidays (no TRT days provided).
- 3.0 TRT days subsidy for all courses will be provided to sites for all regional applicants (excluding Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Adelaide Plains).
- Attendance required at all training days to receive certificates.
- Attendees are expected to formally share their learnings with colleagues to help music programs to flourish at sites.
Kodály Award Generalist Teacher in Music Education
Available as part of our intermediate/continuing course packages, we are funding a new course, the Kodály Award Generalist Teacher in Music Education. Designed for generalist teachers who have completed a foundation course and wish to deepen their music education skills without committing to the accredited intermediate course.
Regional subsidy
- An additional 3.0 TRT days subsidy will be provided to successful regional applicants attending any of the packages. This helps sites to flexibly support additional costs for those attending the course (i.e. travel and accommodation, additional time required off work to travel).

Foundation package 1 – Music – Can Do!
Provided by: Australian Society for Music Education SA Chapter (ASME).
This course is for: preschool educators, generalist primary school teachers with an interest in delivering music as part of a learning program.
Assumed knowledge: there is no assumed prior musical knowledge or experience for this package.
Structure: 3 x 2 full days (6 full days).
Dates:
- Term 2, week 6, Monday 2 June and Tuesday 3 June
- Term 2, week 8, Monday 16 June and Tuesday 17 June
- Term 2, week 10, Monday 30 June and Tuesday 1 July.
Venue: Adelaide West Uniting Church, 312 Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Brooklyn Park.

Description: The ASME ‘Music – Can Do!’ PD package is designed for preschool, early years and primary educators in order to build their confidence to use Music in their setting. Participants will be actively involved in engaging and fun music activities which will develop their individual skills and knowledge of the fundamentals of music, and build their competency and capabilities to embrace effective music pedagogies. The sessions are designed to be very interactive, including singing, listening, moving, creating and playing instruments. The PD package will enable participants to explore why music is vital for a child’s development and how music connects to broader classroom learning. Participants will be provided with comprehensive support materials including detailed notes, audio and video files.
Foundation package 2 – Musical Foundations
Provided by: Kodály SA.
This course is for: preschool educators, generalist primary school teachers and beginner music/performing arts specialists with an interest in delivering music as part of a learning program.
Assumed knowledge: some experience learning or teaching music previously can be an advantage, but not essential.
Structure: 5 full consecutive days in person and 1 day online.
Dates: Monday 23 to Friday 27 June (in person) and Friday 25 July (online day).
Venue: Adelaide University, Hartley Building.
Presenters: Jason Boron and Stephanie Eaton.

Description: This professional learning package is targeted for educators working in primary and early years interested in upskilling in the area of music. The 5-day face-to- face component has 4 sessions each day: Musical Readiness and Pedagogy with Jason Boron (there will be a division into Early years and Primary Pedagogy strand if needed) and Musical Leadership and Musical Immersion with Stephanie Eaton. Participants will be upskilled in the importance of music and music making for children and explore strategies for teaching using developmentally and culturally appropriate songs, rhymes, and instrumental music. Detailed notes and resources of material will be provided to all participants.
Throughout the package, participants will reflect on the development of their own skills and share in the joy, wonder and holistic benefits that learning music can bring to young children. The online day is for reflection, sharing of practice and resources.
Foundation package 3 – Introduction to Creative Music Education
Provided by: Orff-Schulwerk Association of ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï (OSASA).
This course is for: preschool educators, generalist primary school teachers with an interest in delivering music as part of a learning program, specialist music teachers.
Assumed knowledge: some experience learning or teaching music previously would be an advantage, but not essential.
Structure: 3 x 2 full days (6 full days).
Dates: 26 and 27 May, 10 and 11 June, 23 and 24 June.
Venue: Unley Park Baptist Church (Northgate Street, Unley Park).
Presenters: Joanna Patrick, Susan Marshall, Kirrabelle Lovell, Kristie Fudge, Maria Stone and Michael McConnochie.
Saturday workshop date and location: dates and venue to be advised.
Description: This training will introduce participants to creative music education with Orff Schulwerk, a practical and fun approach to teaching music and movement. The approach is focused on the learner, making it collaborative and accessible for all students. Participants will start with speech and body percussion progressing through to playing games, singing, moving, playing instruments and creating. Participants will be able to use and adapt the material presented to their own students and will be given time for feedback and support. Notes will be provided which will explain learning activities, give suggestions for lesson planning and demonstrate links to the curriculum.
Intermediate/continuing package 1
The following are accredited Australian Kodály Certificate (AKCSA 25) courses available for registration:
- Primary level 1
- Early Years level 1.

This course is for:
- Educators who are performing arts specialists/a music specialist and have either a Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Music Education and are working towards one or equivalent experiences in music.
- Early Years educators with a special interest in delivering quality music programs who have good musical skills, such as singing in tune and are able to decode simple music and have done AKC Early years 2 course.

Intermediate/continuing package 2
Provided by: Orff-Schulwerk Association of ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï (OSASA).
This is a nationally accredited course.
In 2025, the level 2 Australian National Council of Orff-Schulwerk (ANCOS) accredited Orff Schulwerk course is available for registration in SA.
We hope to offer the level 1 course again in 2026.
This course is for:
- educators who have previously completed the level 1 ANCOS accredited Orff Schulwerk course and wish to further develop their understanding of the Orff Schulwerk approach.
Assumed knowledge: participants need to be able to read and write basic formal notation (rhythmic and melodic) and have a basic understanding of music theory. Visit the for a full list of requirements.

Venue: Unley Primary School.

Intermediate/continuing package 3 – Australian Kodály Award (generalist teachers)
Provided by: Kodály SA.
This course is for:
- educators who have completed a previous foundation package through Music Education Strategy
- educators with some experience in delivering music
- preschool and primary educators who want to explore Kodály pedagogy
Assumed knowledge: participants need to have some experience delivering music activities for learners.
Structure: 5 days in person
Dates: Tuesday 7 October– Saturday 11 October (October School Holidays)
Venue: Adelaide University, Hartley Building.
