Students help in redesign of Westbourne Park Primary School

5 September 2024

The completion of works worth $6.4 million at Westbourne Park Primary School have been officially celebrated.

The 487 students who attend the inner south primary school, and were present for the opening event, have played a major part in the work, providing feedback about their learning, the spaces around the school and what they would like to see to enhance their learning experiences.

Students were engaged early in the process, providing advice about areas that needed improvement to support their learning, which has helped create a cohesive school design – providing modern facilities for students, staff and the Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) program.

A series of major works have seen developments to enhance student learning, improve the operation of the school, create a welcoming street frontage and soften the hard outdoor surfaces which has all complemented the original 1914 infrastructure.

The work included a refurbishment of the old head teacher’s residence which was the main administration building to create breakout rooms for providers and specialised lessons, a dedicated IT technician and infrastructure space and an accessible toilet.

In addition, a new open plan resource centre has been constructed with new administration facilities, landscaping, and the central area of the junior primary building has been refurbished to share with OSHC to create open learning spaces.

The school also has a refreshed playground with an additional adventure space, complementing a nature play area and an upgraded amenities building.

The capital works project has already received external accolades, winning construction company Marshall & Brougham Constructions a 2024 Master Builders SA award.

The school is also an award winner, being named the recipient of the for Excellence in Learner Agency.

Westbourne Park Primary School Principal Jason Munro said, we had spent a lot of time getting feedback from students about their learning, the spaces around the school and what they would like to see developed, which was a great learning experience for us all.

“Student services was an area highlighted as needing better facilities, so we focused the new administration around having areas for the students to access easily and also cater for their needs”.

“Students also identified having various spaces to be able to work - prior to the new build we only had one space that we could access for meetings or breakout areas and now we have six which get used daily”.

“I know that students, staff and our wider parent community have worked hard to make this the best environment possible for students to learn and thrive”, Munro said.
